Medicare Exam Q & A

What is a Medicare exam?

When you enroll in Medicare Part B, you’ll be required to book a one-time physical preventive exam within the first 12 months of enrollment. A Medicare annual wellness exam is not to be confused with a standard yearly physical.

The Medicare exam is a yearly appointment between you and a team member at Wasatch Peak Family Practice that establishes your prevention plan for the year.

A Medicare exam's sole purpose is to provide you with a comprehensive preventive care plan to set you up for a healthy year.

During your visit, you can expect your practitioner to:

  • Evaluate your medical and family history
  • Check your blood pressure, vision, weight, and height
  • Check your immunization and cancer screening status
  • Order additional tests based on your overall health

Does Medicare cover your annual wellness exam?

Medicare covers your annual wellness exam if you book the exam within 12 months of enrollment or if you haven’t received a yearly wellness exam in the last 12 months.

It’s important to remember that Medicare only covers your “Welcome to Medicare” exam once in a calendar year, so you can’t request coverage for both an annual wellness exam and a Medicare exam.

Which preventive care screenings does Medicare cover?

The most common preventive care screenings covered under Medicare include:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cervical and vaginal cancer
  • Diabetes
  • HIV
  • Lung cancer
  • Mammograms
  • Nutrition therapy
  • Prostate cancer
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

You’re also eligible for coverage for a variety a shots, including the flu, Hepatitis B, and Pneumococcal.

For what conditions should you be screened?

The team at Wasatch Peak Family Practice understands that each patient requires unique sets of screenings. As you age, however, it’s essential that you schedule screenings for chronic, age-related conditions, including:

  • Depression
  • Risk of falling
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Vision/hearing impairments
  • Irregular blood pressure
  • Tobacco and alcohol abuse
  • High cholesterol

How should you prepare for a Medicare exam?

When getting reading for your Medicare exam, you should be ready to discuss any medical issues you feel might become a problem in the coming year.

You should be prepared to bring your medical records, to discuss your family’s medical history and a list of the prescription drugs you’ve taken in the past or are currently taking.

If you’ve just enrolled in Medicare, call the team at Wasatch Peak Family Practice today to book your Medicare exam.
